Still I Rise

This song, performed beautifully by Yolanda Adams, was composed by Percy Bady and released in 2005.  It is dedicated to Rosa Parks and interpolated with Maya Angelou’s line “still I rise” with the theme of perseverance ringing throughout it.  The lyrics grab you right from the start:

Shattered, but I’m not broken
Wounded but time will heal

It’s a really lovely song that can reduce one to tears, especially if one happens to be going through some hard things in life.

Everything Will Be Alright

Some nice uptempo toe tapping gospel song. A somewhat more contemporary version of an old traditional song from Benny Cummings’ last album.

Benny Cummings was popular in the late 70’s to mid 80’s. From New York, he was one of the premier choir directors of his time. He never experienced mainstream success but influenced most of the choir directors thereafter. Ricky Dillard, Donald Lawrence, James Hall and Hezekiah Walker all credit Benny Cummings as inspiration. Donnie McClurkin started out singing with his choir. Benny Cummings passed away in 1988 shortly after the release of his last album “With His Stripes”. (Source: answers.com)

Love Paid The Price

To make up for not posting yesterday, and because I love this song, and because it is an Easter song, I’m posting it today (Easter) as well. Another wonderful song from the genius of Edwin Hawkins.

Lord

Trin-i-tee 5:7 was a gospel trio from New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 1990’s. The group, who sold over 2.5 million albums, was marketed as a gospel alternative to R&B girl groups such as Destiny’s Child and TLC. The 1990’s saw the emergence of this type of “Urban Gospel” sound aimed directly at inner city youth in major black markets.

The group’s self titled debut album was released in 1998. The project debuted at No. 3 on the gospel charts and eventually stepped up to the top slot. It also reached the R&B Top 20 charts and was eventually certified gold. The album created three gospel radio hits in “You Can Always Call His Name,” “Mary Don’t You Weep” and “God’s Grace.” The CD would go on to spend 7 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Album chart, over 30 weeks in the Top on Billboard’s Contemporary Christian chart, and almost 50 weeks on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart.

In mid-1999, as they were about to finish recording their second album, Terri Brown left the group to focus more on her family, and was quickly replaced by the group’s make up artist Adrian Anderson.  (You take talent wherever you can find it! – RLS)  [Source: Wikipedia]

Old School Gospel Medley

Keeping the old school/traditional gospel music theme going, here is an amateur recording of the Male Chorus of the First Baptist Church in Washington DC doing a medley of old songs.  It’s fun to sing along with…join in with the lady sitting next to the person recording the song  😉

There’s a Leak in this Old Building

My, my, my….

Okay, I was thinking about my Mom’s last days early this morning and I thought about the old song “There’s a Leak in this Old Building (and my soul has got to move)”, so I thought I’d look around YouTube for some versions I didn’t know.  (The most famous version is by LaShun Pace Rhodes who, I just learned, sang the song at Whitney Houston’s Homecoming).

Anyways, after listening to a LOT of versions, I stumbled on this gem by the “Angel City Chorale” from, where else, LA!! Not only is this the best version I found, the quality is exceptional and the choir caught me by surprise.
