Until My Day Is Done

I don’t think I’ve posted a song by the great Albertina Walker, a true gospel legend. Albertina was the founder of the famous “Caravans” in the early fifties (member of the Caravans included James Cleveland, Bessie Griffin, Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood, Inez Andrews to name a few). She died in 2010 after a long career that included over 60 albums, a Grammy,  several gold records, Stellar awards and Dove awards! She is also a part of gospel royalty, having been dubbed “The Queen of Gospel”, and was inducted into the Gospel Hall of Fame in 2001 (Source:Wikipedia)

I’ve Got to Make It Home

Some great toe tapping, hand clapping uptempo traditional gospel from a recording made at the annual The Gospel Music Workshop of America convention held in Dallas Texas in 2006.

Lift The Savior Up

There are sooo many versions and variations of this song that I could do a couple of weeks worth of posts, but for now lets just start with this one,

  1. Lift The Savior Up Patrick Love & the A. L. Jinwright Mass Choir 3:36

Not long after the 1998 release of this debut recording “Patrick Love presents the A.L. Jinwright Mass Choir,” a Billboard magazine article listed them as one of the “new choirs to watch”. New choirs are being introduced constantly, but this choir is special. THE VISION, their sophomore project, combined the musical talents of Co-producer Cedric Thompson (a hot, young, new producer, making his presence felt on the contemporary gospel scene), and producer Patrick Love himself. This album is full of energy with powerful, spirit-filled songs.

Dance Like It’s Sunday

Okay, because not all of you understand Swahili all that well making the prior post a bit less than inspirational, I’m making today a TWO-FER Sunday.(I know…”What a good guy!”)

And what better song to share than a great hip-hop contemporary song called “Dance Like It’s Sunday”. So, get another cup of Joe and get your bounce on as you groove to this cut.

Utanna pona

Today we’re off to South Africa to hear a cut by the South African Gospel Singers. I have no idea what the title means, but it really doesn’t matter; the sound is wonderful.

Spirit and Truth

Newer praise and worship songs like this aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I LOVE ’em. I love the soaring guitar solo that picks up around 3:03 goes right to the end. The voices of the individual parts on the vamp are great too (love the audience feedback too!)

Praise is What I Do

This song from 2001 was a huge hit for the Shekinah Glory Ministry choir, based almost solely on the exhortation/lead  provided by William Murphy. It is songs exactly like this where William Murphy is incomparable. He can’t sing all that well, but he has these exhortation parts down pat.

I just recently learned that it is this same William Murphy who sings the exhortation on the Full Gospel Baptist Fellowship Mass Choir’s songHe Is Here“, a song JVOI did way back in 2002 or so.

Marvelous Things

Here’s a great contemporary version of “Marvelous Things”. I personally prefer this version over the traditional one. I love this cut!

Jesus is a Rock in a Weary Land

The (sadly now defunct) Harlem Boys Choir executes this wonderful spiritual perfectly. All you JVOI folks who know it, sing along!!

Hold On To God’s Unchanging Hand

Today we have a sing along!! Here is a great churchy organ track to the old gospel chestnut, “Hold On To God’s Unchanging Hand”. I’ve included the simple refrain…this isn’t the WHOLE song, so just take your laptop or iPhone into the shower this morning and have a little church as you bathe! Gives new meaning to the term “being washed in the spirit”.

Hold To God’s Unchanging Hand

Refrain:
Hold to His hand, God’s unchanging hand,
Hold to His hand, God’s unchanging hand;
Build your hopes on things eternal,
Hold to God’s unchanging hand.
