Your Tears

I find this to be an incredibly powerful, uplifting song, especially when I might be going through some sad times. Song says “Your tears are just temporary release of the pain, sorrow and grief…don’t ya worry, God’s gonna wipe every tear away.”

Don’t give up on the song; after the first two solo verses the whole choir kicks in at 3:15 and that’s when the song starts to really take off.

Count Your Blessings

“So my brothers and my sisters, stop counting your problems and negatives in your life and start counting your blessings” Amen.

The female leads singing with Timothy Wright are fantastic; they leave you wanting more!

Oh, FYI, I turned on a new feature that shows “related” songs at the bottom of each post, but to be honest, I’m not sure HOW the songs might be related; they are more random than related.  They are selected based on the tags I’ve assigned to each song and it’s clear I need more granularity in my tags for this to work correctly.  Nonetheless, it’s a nice feature and a good way to get to some more good songs without having to go back to through the archives.

Grace

“By grace I’m saved today…”

Here is an offering from Pastor Esther Smith. Esther put out two albums betweeen 1988 and 2000 and recorded with some of Gospel’s most formidable producers, namely the late Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, Pastor Marvin Winans, Fred Hammonds, Michael Brooks, Tim Bowman, William Duncan and Damon Gough.  This song is from her 1996 album, “All the Way”.

The Holy Spirit

Another offering from the great Keith Pringle, with a little help from The Pentecostal Community Choir,  Ricky Grundy and Jeffrey LaValley.

I was going to say something like “this is one of my favorites”, but that is getting a little trite by now and, since I pick the songs to post, each one is a favorite or I wouldn’t share it to begin with. Nonetheless, this song IS one of my favorites!!  Great recording too…great separation.

I Can’t Feel at Home (in this World Anymore)

Nice old skool gospel from the New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the direction of the talented Jeffrey LaValley.  Love it when the sopranos come in with the soaring, high “can’t feel”.  The verses of the song are just a bit longer than the great vamp that runs about 2:30.

I’ll Stand Until

This is a wonderfully powerful song from Bishop Paul S. Morton’s New Orleans based Full Gospel Baptist Fellowship Mass Choir. One of the neat things about the song is that the intro and the exhortation is by none other than Kirk Franklin. (Kirk Franklin actually wrote the song in 1996.)

The song just gets more and more intense over its 8 minutes, and starts soaring to new heights starting about 4:45. It’s wonderful how a song this powerful can be built around the simple words:

Lord, I’ll stand until You come for me.
Regardless of my condition.
In spite of my situation.
I’ll stand until You come for me.

Amen.

How Long Til He Comes

The name of this group might say “Youth Choir”, but it’s impossible not to think this is a finely polished adult choir. I’m always so impressed with the magnificent job these young people do. Hurray for organizations like The Gospel Music Workshop of America for offering programs for young singers to develop their musical skills.

Home

Another classic song from gospel great, Ms. Myrna Summers and The Dallas Fort Worth Mass Choir!

This song is an amazing 9 minute opus that opens with a wonderful 3 minute, 45 second solo intro by Myrna who is then joined by the whole choir for the rest of this soulful, moving song.  This is gospel at it’s best.

Say the Word

From the Benedict College Gospel Choir of Columbia, South Carolina. Song says, “If-you-want to be born again, say, say the word!”  DON”T skip this song because it’s some college group; these guys are all-pro. The soloist sounds remarkably like Aretha!  Not bad for college kids”.
