Some more good old-time gospel for a friend who loves this music. I’ve never heard of the Gospel Starlets of Brooklyn New York, and couldn’t find a bio on them. They made a great sound though!

For all of you who might be hankering for a shot of good old traditional gospel, I have just the song for you. Here is “He’ll Understand And Say Well Done” by Philadelphia’s renowned Davis Sisters recorded in 1955.

“So my brothers and my sisters, stop counting your problems and negatives in your life and start counting your blessings” Amen.
The female leads singing with Timothy Wright are fantastic; they leave you wanting more!

Oh, FYI, I turned on a new feature that shows “related” songs at the bottom of each post, but to be honest, I’m not sure HOW the songs might be related; they are more random than related. They are selected based on the tags I’ve assigned to each song and it’s clear I need more granularity in my tags for this to work correctly. Nonetheless, it’s a nice feature and a good way to get to some more good songs without having to go back to through the archives.
Another offering from the great Keith Pringle, with a little help from The Pentecostal Community Choir, Ricky Grundy and Jeffrey LaValley.
I was going to say something like “this is one of my favorites”, but that is getting a little trite by now and, since I pick the songs to post, each one is a favorite or I wouldn’t share it to begin with. Nonetheless, this song IS one of my favorites!! Great recording too…great separation.

Nice old skool gospel from the New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the direction of the talented Jeffrey LaValley. Love it when the sopranos come in with the soaring, high “can’t feel”. The verses of the song are just a bit longer than the great vamp that runs about 2:30.

The name of this group might say “Youth Choir”, but it’s impossible not to think this is a finely polished adult choir. I’m always so impressed with the magnificent job these young people do. Hurray for organizations like The Gospel Music Workshop of America for offering programs for young singers to develop their musical skills.
Another classic song from gospel great, Ms. Myrna Summers and The Dallas Fort Worth Mass Choir!
This song is an amazing 9 minute opus that opens with a wonderful 3 minute, 45 second solo intro by Myrna who is then joined by the whole choir for the rest of this soulful, moving song. This is gospel at it’s best.

Last week I posted another version of this song performed by The Chicago Mass Choir. Today we are revisiting the song performed this time by my favorite female gospel singer, Beverly Crawford.
Hang on to your hat and get ready to clap your hands and stomp your feet as you listen to this great song that grabs ya from the first beat.

Side note: I was trying to find out the name of the choir backing Beverly up on this cut, but failed to. What I did find was a web page listing some of the relevant influences on the song as attributed by Pandora’s Music Genome Project. I’m not so sure that any aspect of the vocals on this song are “subtle”, but it’s fun to see what they picked.
Features of This Track: R & B influences a subtle use of vocal harmony mild rhythmic syncopation acoustic rhythm piano mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation major key tonality prominent organ
These are just a few of the hundreds of attributes cataloged for this track by the Music Genome Project.
A cut from Aretha Franklin’s 1972 double platinum, Grammy winning, “Amazing Grace” album. Great uptempo, traditional gospel, and a wonderful reminder of what an amazing voice “The Queen of Soul” has. The only problem is the song is WAY too short; you’re left wanting a lot more.
