Elijah Rock

Tighten your seat belt and hold on for an amazing version of “Elijah Rock” performed by old school gospel legend, Rev. Charles Nicks and The St. James Choir from Detroit Michigan. The intro alone is worth the price of admission.

A Leak in the Building

Caution: Listen to this song at your own risk.  Whenever I listen to it, I get a bad case of earworm; it stays in my head and I end up singing it to myself all day long.

Traditional call and response gospel at it’s very best. Here’s Voice of Atlanta doing an amazing acapella version of the song. The other version I’ve included is from the gospel legend LaShun Pace-Rhodes; her voice is like no other and this song is right in her wheelhouse.

As I get a bit older and creakier, I can image the day will come when the leaks in my old building will be enough to make my soul want to move to another building…one not made by hands.
Happy Friday!

Someday

I recently just happened to stumble across a choir named “Voice of Atlanta” and they have recorded some great songs on their “Are You Listening” CD. I thought I’d share a few of them with you starting with this song, “Someday”, written by the group’s founder and director, Adam McKnight.

When Sir Elton John was writing the original score for the Broadway musical “The Vampire Lestat” he wanted a few gospel singers to present the music. He was told Adam McKnight was the person to call. Quickly dazzling him by recording 7 songs in 5 hours, Sir Elton was sold! From that initial encounter, Adam and the entire Voice of Atlanta choir (“entire” meaning only 11 voices) were asked to perform on Elton’s 2004 album, Peachtree Road. Elton loved their quick study, work ethic and natural vibe and the group has since toured around the world with Sir Elton John.

From Adam McKnight’s bio:

With a captivating personality, unyielding stage presence and an incredible voice, Adam L. McKnight, opens his heart and soul in song!! Performing all styles of music, from R& B to Gospel, Pop and even Opera, Adam amazes and astounds audiences with his natural ability to sing. Performing on-stage in bands since age 13, Adam has settled in comfortably as not just a singer, but also an entertainer, putting his heart and soul into every song he sings and enjoying the experience.

An Uncloudy Day

One of the first gospel songs I heard that really touched me and I’m not sure exactly why. It’s a classic from 1982 written and composed by gospel great Myrna Summer.

Everything Will Be Alright

One of Rev. James Cleveland’s best known songs is titled “Everything Will Be Alright”. Today I present two audio looks into the idea that “Everything Will Be Alright”.

The first cut is from the CD “Gospel Legends” produced and released by Milton Biggham and Malco Records, and is pretty much the way Cleveland wrote it.

The second cut is from the late, great, O’Landa Draper and his Associates and is a much more contemporary, urban version, but just as great in its own right as the more traditional approach. Happy Friday!!

Praise Him

This song was a Geoff Hicks Inspirational Choir staple during it’s four years before the choir became Joyful Voices of Inspiration.

The song is a staple of the black church and this is a wonderful live recording featuring Rev. Milton Biggham (founder of The Georgia Mass Choir) and Lillian Lily performing the solo leads.  Those of you who know the song, sing along this morning.  Those of you who don’t know it will pick it up in about 10 seconds.
