This is one of The Clark Sisters’ mega hits from the 1981. I find it to be a brilliant song on so many levels, starting with the crazy rhythm the song opens up with. It’s impossible to tell what the time signature might be…the beat is all over the place, but it all gets resolved once they launch into the song itself with it’s great reggae guitar. The harmonies and the form of the song are unique unto themselves too; this was a break-through piece of contemporary gospel music where Detroit style reggae/disco/funk slams into gospel lyrics. Urban gospel being born. Not everyone was crazy about the song and Twinkie (nee Elbertina) Clark who wrote the song, took a lot of heat from her church for putting such a groove into a gospel song. She said she was strongly influenced by Stevie Wonder’s reggae beat on “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” (which I also added to today’s playlist)

“You Brought the Sunshine” is among the 100 most influential gospel songs of all time, according to The Black Gospel Blog.
