Rance Allen is has never been your typical gospel performer. He has a totally unique style and voice; it is a crossover mix of soul/r&b/gospel and a bit of pop. But it works for what it is…very different contemporary gospel.
This is a great FUNKY contemporary gospel song with a terrific sax part and great, simple vocals with great harmonies. The tag line “Give Him Praise” can stay with you long after the song is over! And the part where they exhort, “Praise him with the horns, praise him with the horns, praise him with the horns” and then the sax cuts in is fantastic.
I’m not always very partial to using saxes in gospel songs (with apologies to Willie Sordillo), but it works perfectly on this song. I know VERY little about Voices of Atlanta other than they make great music and have been around since 2001.
Just released today, December 21, 2018, this is a remix of the song “One Last Time” from Hamilton…a GOSPEL remix, with President Obama reading Washington’s lyrics before it breaks into a wonderful ending gospel vamp.

A while ago I posted a version of Tina Turner singing this song, but this might be even better. It features Bishop G. E. Patterson.
Growing up on Orleans street in the Lauderdale Sub neighborhood of Memphis, he was saved at 11 years old at a revival held in Holy Temple COGIC. Holy Temple COGIC was founded by his father. Later he moved with his family to Detroit, where his father pastored a second church New Jerusalem COGIC. At the age of 16, he received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and answered his call to ministry in 1956 while he was only 16 years old at New Jerusalem. On November 14, 2000, Patterson was elected as Presiding Bishop of the Church Of God In Christ and he served until his death in 2007…a year after this recording was released.
Mary Mary are actually sisters Erica Atkins-Campbell and Trecina Atkins-Campbell. Formed in 1998, Mary Mary was launched into mainstream recognition following the release of their best-selling debut album, Thankful, which contained not only this track but the hit single “Shackles (Praise You)”. Their followup album Incredible (2002), reached number one on the Top Gospel Albums chart. Their third album, Mary Mary (2005), contains the worldwide hits “Heaven”, and “Yesterday”. The group’s name is inspired by two famous Marys from the Bible: Mary, mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene.
Another great version of a timeless old song to add to the two I’ve published in the past. The song never gets old and it always makes me think of the kind of life people have, whether incarcerated or imprisoned by life’s hardships, that makes them long to fly away to a better place.

Some bright morning when this life is over, I’ll fly away To that home on God’s celestial shore, I’ll fly away
When the shadows of this life have gone, I’ll fly away Like a bird from these prison walls I’ll fly, I’ll fly away
Oh, how glad and happy when we meet, I’ll fly away No more cold iron shackles on my feet, I’ll fly away
Just a few more weary days and then, I’ll fly away To a land where joys will never end, I’ll fly away
This is a great song, albeit a tad long at just over 9 minutes. If the first 4 minutes and 42 seconds don’t quite do it for you (I LIKE it…especially the echo/reverb effect on “money’s gone”), then head right for 4 minute+ vamp. I love it; nothing special or gimmicky, just good out call and response gospel. Enjoy

Oh my!! I have a NEW favorite song I just stumbled across a few days ago and I can’t stop listening to it!! It is a bit of a mash up of several genres and gospel styles and it all works soooo well. AND, every now and again, pay attention to the bassline…it’s awesome as well. I’d love to hear some comments as to what YOU think of the song; my taste in music can be a bit….how do you say….different!
ENJOY!!!
